Believe in Your Ability to Fulfill Your Dreams

If you set out to achieve, contribute or experience something in your life- whatever that is- it is critical to believe that you can be successful. What are you working to do in your life right now? What is your dream? What are the goals you set in place to make that dream a reality? Do you believe that you can be successful?

If you responded yes, “I do believe that I can be successful”, great! Reinforce those reasons on a regular basis. I have a few quotes and scripture verses that really inspire and empower me and I look at them regularly. Create a poster that states your “why” and frame it, or write it on a piece of paper and tack it to your bulletin board by your desk. How has this belief and confidence affected your life? Your success at reaching a goal? Believing you are capable of succeeding at your endeavor is powerful. Likewise, lack of belief is just as powerful.

“The most influential person who will talk to you all day, is you. So, you should be very careful what you say to you.” – Zig Ziglar

The Power of Disbelief

When we do not believe that we are capable of successfully fulfilling a goal or a dream, that thought influences our attitude, behaviors, the effort we exert, and the decisions we make along the way. If you do not believe you are capable then I suggest that you reassess why you are doing it in the first place. If you decide it is NOT a worthwhile endeavor then at least you can decide how you will handle that (e.g. stop the project, remove yourself from the commitment if possible, or complete your commitment and move on, etc.) rather than half-heartedly trying to do something.

If you deem the endeavor a worthy one- one that you feel compelled to pursue, that connects with who you are and the difference you want to make in the world, start with a fresh perspective and revitalized thinking. How?

How to Start with a Fresh Perspective

Understand where the lack of belief is coming from. Is it a fear that is not based in reality? Or is there a legitimate concern that you have? In my life there have been times when I put off doing something or finishing something due to a fear or lack of belief in my ability to do it well. So, fear of failure was keeping me from pursuing something I knew I wanted to do! Think of a time in your life when you let fear of failing keep you from starting or finishing something. Is that happening now?

When we let fear of failure keep us from living the life we were truly meant to live, we are deciding what the outcome is before we even start! How presumptive of us, really- that we should know and ascertain the outcome of a worthy endeavor so negatively. And, I am a positive person to say the least, and if I have had moments like this I know you may have too.

Alternatively, if you have legitimate concerns based on reality, get clear about what those concerns are so you can address them head-on. You may have concerns about your lifestyle supporting your endeavor; you may have concerns about your preparedness or skills. As we go about fulfilling our dreams and calling, the shape of what that calling looks like in our lives can change throughout the years. This may suggest that in order to take the next step or go to the next level you need to modify your lifestyle or take a class to develop needed skills, for example.

Leaving My Corporate Job

A few years ago, when I made the leap from my corporate job to Launch Your Life, I assessed that the direction that my life calling was taking required me to make some adjustments and grow personally to become successful. I became compelled to be a better steward, and more efficient in the use of the resources I have in my care (e.g. my time, money, skills, stuff, efforts, and relationships). Recently, I have also come to the realization that in order to grow to the next level personally and in my business I needed the support and guidance of mentors. So, rather than letting concerns or fears of failure keep me from moving forward, I addressed them head-on. What steps do you need to take to address any concerns head-on?

When you know (a deep inner sense or peace at your core) that you are moving in the direction you need to go, then by all means cling to that rather than any self-defeating thought, fear or even stubbornness that you have to know exactly how to do something before moving forward. Decide that you will be successful because it is what you are supposed to be doing and use any concerns or lack of belief in your ability as steps in your progress- if you examine them and deal with them effectively they will serve as wisdom, growth, and teachers. Most importantly, by dealing with them effectively you free yourself to fulfill your dream, your goal, and become more of who you really are. As a result, you are able to create the life you want, and make the difference and contribution in the world that you deeply want to make.
